Welcome to the spirituality blog

This blog is an offshoot of a website that I had conceived as a result of the spiritual grace and resultant inspiration during Shivaratri Y2K (http://www.jyotirlinga.com) on the joy of Shiva Bhakti and my quest for spiritual progress. Not finding the time (yep, bad excuse!), this blog suits me fine in quickly adding content... my spiritual forays and thoughts - helps log them too. My spiritual journey started with Hinduism and it's simple stories/ teachings as far back as when I was a 2nd grader, with Lord Shiva and has now found convergence with Advaitism / Duality. The Advaitism gurus like Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi, Nisargadatta Maharaj; they have provided that spiritual boost of energy in many lagging moments and have tremendously influenced me ... little baby steps at a time... that will hopefully all lead upto a final crescendo. The merits of satsangh are many!

Your comments (encouragement/ otherwise) are certainly welcome. Thanks for visiting. If you like it, Subscribe to my blog (click here):Posts (Atom).

Balance of power is shifting

The balance of power is truly shifting from the west back to the east.
The Eastern Superpowers of the world are looming in the horizon...

Back in the glory days of Eastern cultural zenith, lots of spiritual discoveries were made and expounded upon. Are we ready to glide back into those times where spirituality will dominate the thoughts and teachings of the world?

Will that ultimately lead to the 1000 years of peace and happiness that Nostradamus predicted?

A hundred years down the road, the world will certainly present an altogether different picture.

Read on - the changing face of India and the East. Series of articles from 12/2/06 to 12/8/06

Meditation technique that is rewarding...

There is a belief amongst the followers of Adishankaracharya and many propounders of Advaitism that Shiva pervades all living in the universe. I find it beneficial to foucs upon myself as nothing else but part of Shiva - imagining myself as the Shiva form. We are all forms of God anyway (the source of the energy that nourishes us) the light source to which all of us are connected.

"Because Jyotiba was formed by the amalgamation of the jyotis (souls) of three gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva who took the form of Jyotiba to destroy the evil Ratnasur. By the way Jyotiba is also referred to as Dattatreya."

Software Versus Religion

I was having an interesting discussion with a friend last night.
She was discussing the troubles and travails of life - nothing significant - but just the day to day pressure living in a high tech world, dealing with family and work pressures. I do cease and desist from painting myself as a religious bigot (which I am definitely not!) or overwhelm folks with my views about the atman and our awareness being the one-stop shop for fixing all the troubles in life. This is because I believe, this realization can only happen due to the journey that we make, and there is no fast forward button. Giving a discourse is good as long as the person can relate to it..There is lot of misinterpretation that can happen when it comes to spirituality or religion and maintaining a neutral stance is best, I think, unless we truly understand that the person is vested in the chain of thought and my reasoning behind it.

But in this case, I did end up talking a bit about my perspective. How a significant stress alleviator can be our realization and reconciliation of the fact that we are never really in control - and that life just plays out - we are an actor after all in the big scheme..... How it is best to keep our bag in the overhead bin of the plane and not carry it through the flight (of life). This naturally led to the classic discussion of fate versus free will (which is usually the case - here is the link to the writeup on that http://shivabhakta.blogspot.com/search/label/fate%20versus%20free%20will) and I pointed out that religion is politics and that zealots over the years have misinterpreted stuff to exert influence over society. Some of that religion improvisation (like marriage) was a good thing as it leads to some semblance of order, uniformity and control over society.... and Karma is another. But, I do believe religion has been extended for various ulterior motives. Hinduism, Christianity, Jainism, Judaism, Islam everyone says that KNOW THYSELF, THAT YOU ARE GOD, but this concept is hidden behind all the bandwidth consumption that has happened just over time, and various personalities impacting this truth in their own way.

So here's a picture on that (Click on it to enlarge)

This whole concept of God was meant to be the last picture (tire hanging on the tree) - our awareness of our true nature. Lots of blogs (spiritual books) were written on it - and misinterpretation naturally happened. We lost track of what was the truth and the essence over time and we ended up making things utterly complex, provided avenues for the power mongers of society to control society.

In our conversation I realized that she had the inner urge to do good as she wanted to preserve the karmic vibrations for the next life. Why struggle with this too? Just be!

There seems to be no karma connotations (at least for me) for the next life. We all are given certain choices - choices that we need to make for ourselves - before our re-birth. We get to pick and choose the test that we need to go through to cleanse ourselves and be ready for Moksha. Some of us take up too much hardship and hopefully the cleansing does happen.

Having a bad day? Stay in the realms of your cave.

I would highly recommend Eckhart Tolle's book, Power of Now.

Eckhart talks about monitoring our own experiences, being in touch with our feelings, touch home-base several times a day (Hey Atman, how are you feeling?). Unfortunately, I am still not there yet, and if I start to worry about something, it plays on my mind no end. Writing it down on a piece of paper helps. The drama continues to play out in my head and I am captured totally gripped with the emotion of it, losing all semblance of rationality, whether it is jealousy, anger, envy - and yes typically these are negative emotions. The positive joyous ones remind me that something bad may be in store and I cannot really live in the moment.

What Eckhart recommends is to notice it and then return to or atman. Ramana Maharishi has said the same thing and so has Nisargadatta Maharaj. Ramesh Balsekhar pretty much says the same thing in a different way - what is to happen is already drawn up - your worrying does not change it. So, why worry?

Having a bad day still is a pure state of mind. If we can dwell in the atman, within my awareness, two things can happen
a) I might not be adversely influenced by the emotional impact of the happenings - coerced into doing something more drastic
b) I may also get the strength to work around the situation knowing that I am not really in control.

Man - the perpetual machine

Matrix was probably the first movie of its kind depicting the human race as the perpetual machine that powers the robots (energy source).

LEGO Matrix

"The Island" http://imdb.com/title/tt0399201/ has Ewan McGregor on the run after he discovers that he is actually a harvested energy source.

There seems to be some truth to it. Think of the humans as a very sophisticated perpetual machine.

Secrets of Tajmahal

Was it really a Shiv Mandir? Tejo Mahal? If so, is the Lingam hidden in the Garbha Griha and will need an "Indian Jan (Janardhan) and the TejoMahal of Choom" to uncover the secrets? Sounds like a great bollywood movie and after the special effects of Dhoom2 - bollywood is up there....That movie of Sunny Deol was treading into new territory too, but I digress...Anyway, I own the copyright of this idea now :-) It is logged right here in this blog....Hmmmm....what a movie will that be, on the sets of the Taj Mahal.

Secrets beneath the Garbha Griha
http://indiatemple.blogspot.com/2006/11/secrets-beneath-garbha-griha.html

I have heard similar stories of the Pashupatinath Mandir in Kathmandu. If you have not been there, put it in your travel plans, Raja and Rank are sitting outside this mandir in hopes of hitting that sweet (moksha) spot.

Watch Maharishi TV on the internet (Transcidental Meditation)

I would love to hear your personal experiences with TM.
Seems like it is catered for the wealthy, a bit pricey, but the effects I hear is dramatic.
It seems to deviate from the simplicity of spiritual leaders, but then there is substinence considerations. There are many publicists for this including David Lynch (director of Mulholland drive, what a movie it is!!! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166924/ Only a pure spiritualist could conceive of such a movie) and he does have a very convincing case study (his own) that exemplifies the value of TM.

Web 2.0 World - Leveling the Playing Field

The blogs of the world are uniting the mind and the spirit....
The static web pages are so passe now...
The dynamic video embellished web pages, blogs are here to stay.

I finally seem to have reconciled to the blog world...I am certainly not an early adopter and fail to really understand what a new technology brings about, my mind is just not tuned to the cause and effect of change, but I do know and understand that it can be something really fantastic and beautiful - based on past experience. Blogs, I wondered what use is that - but once I jumped into the blog world, it is a limitless experience.....presto an altogether different world has opened up..
.... the fascinating thing about the Web 2.0 Technology is the resonance this has caused to happen.

The static web pages brought information together and shrunk the world in some ways
The Web 2.0 world effect is even more dramatic, by bringing together the minds, and seemingly has shrunk the minds into one ways...thoughts are being exchanged, resonated and identified with. It is very uncanny to read blogs from all over the world and see that how similar our thoughts can be, how similar is the thought pattern of myself with someone else half way around the world.

Web 2.0 is ultimately poised for something much more dramatic, it will cause the revolution that people will look back and history books will talk about...
Hmm...maybe not that dramatic?

Pranayam is as old as Yoga, but Ramdevji has created a social stir by bringing it to the limelight. Though its origin is shrouded in antiquity, it was organized in a definite system by Maharishi Patanjali in his treatise "Yoga Darshana" (Philosophy of Yoga) or "Yoga Sutra" (Aphorisms on Yoga) as it is popularly known. While so far most of the focus was on Yogasanas (Yoga exercises), this unique and ancient breathing technique was not given much importance. Ramdevji says that in his life he has discovered that if practiced for a long duration of time, it has the power to overpower and counteract several illnesses, apart from rejuvenating the body.

Keeping this in mind he advocates seven types of Pranayam techniques along with a set of Yogasanas for daily living. Some of these most popular ones are Bhastrika, Anulom-Vilom, Brahmri and Kapalbhaati. These techniques have become so popular that their names are on everyone's lips. Kapalbhaati has become the most famous mantra for those wishing to reduce their weight. And, more so as the visual demonstration (on TV) is extremely impressive - air being taken in through the nostrils and thrown out by pushing the stomach in.

Ramdevji explains that Pranayam follows a scientific method. While the 'breathing-in' technique rejuvenates the tissues of the body and supplies more oxygen to them, the 'breathing out' technique churns out the toxins from the body.

But, Pranayam is so effective that not only does it cure them (ailments), it also has no side effects.

Yoga means concentration of mind. Both the body and the mind becomes strong with yoga. In this the respiratory system is to be preserved for the existence. Thinking is the root cause of old age. Yoga is the only way which works the inner thought and to keep the body in normal condition. Yoga Education is as essential as, air, water & light. All types of diseases are cured by Yogasan and Prayanayam. The main object of Yoga is to have Daiva Sakshatkara, Moksha and Brahama prapti in addition to maintain physical health. Patanjali Maha Rishi has narrated this Yoga in 185 slokas as Patanjali Yoga Shastra,
Swamy Ramdevji of Haridwar is preaching this Pranayam for the welfare of the Humanity.

PRANAYAM:
Pranayam means controlling of Pran (breath) to activate our body,One has to perform the following Pranayam for about 30 minutes with full concentration and faith to cure all
sorts of diseases and to keep a healthy body & pure mind by closing the eyes in Dhyan Mudra,

YOG ASANAS FOR: Heart disease , Diabetes, Weight loss, stomach problems, Cervical, spondylitis, slipped-disc, sciatica, spinal problems, sinus, asthma, and arthritis etc. are treated by means of various asanas (postures) like manduk asan, shaskh asan, uttan-pad asan, pavanmukt asan bharkya asan and bhujang asan etc. these asans are taught with precise traditional scientific knowledge and rational systems.

B) PRANAYAM (Rhythmic Control of Breath), BANDHA (a posture where certain organs of the body are contracted and controlled) and KUNDALINI JAGRAN (awakening of one's divine cosmic energy) -Via the teachings and instructions of Bhastrika Pranayam (long and short breath control ), Ujjayi Pranayam (expansion of lungs), and through different techniques like Mool Bandha, Uddhiana Bandha, Jalandhara Bandha etc,and by way of Kundalini Jagran, a disciple is able to study, experience and achieve union with the Supreme Universal Soul- Brahma

WHEN TO DO

Yoga & Pranayama (Breathing techniques) is to be done on empty stomach after you have been to the toilet first thing in the morning. The following Yoga and Pranayama will take just 25-30 minutes daily. For faster results, you may do "Yoga Excercises" & "Pranayamas", in the evening for the second time, but please ensure that there is a gap of 4 -5 hours, after meals. (Swami Ramdev Ji recommends it is 95% Pranayama & 5% yoga exercises so you have to stop doing Pilates and jogging altogether, as that may displace your Navel again. )

. "Bhastrika Pranayama", "Kapalbhati", "Bahya Pranayama with Agnisaar Kriya", "Anulom-Vilom Pranayama", "Bhramari Pranayama", "Ujjayi Pranayama" & in the end "Shavaasan".

The participant has to begin with full inhalation by closing the mouth lips tightly closed, tongue sticking to palate, chin tucked near throat so as to lead the exhaled rush of air through the nasal passage forcefully. The force is exercised by the diaphragm, by pulling in all the stomach muscles. This action is to be repeated continuously, wherein the stomach muscles will be pulled in, and relaxed in quick succession. Air will be forced out of nostrils and nasal passage when the diaphragm is pulled in. In the relax stage of the diaphragm air will be automatically sucked in. More air will be thrown out than inhaled. After about 6 to 7 successive exhalations, volume on air going out of nose will reduce. Then participant should relax to take deep breath to repeat the whole exercise once more. During this exercise all the mucus blocking the nasal passage would be thrown out. Therefore, participants may keep handkerchief on hand. However, one did not feel embarrassed because of this. During the exhalation press your stomach inside by pulling the diaphragm upwards. Later on press the rib cage down using your chest muscles. While breathing in first relax the diaphragm allowing the stomach to inflate. Expand the rib cage upwards thereafter. Repeat the exercise 5 times i.e., 5 inhalations and 5 exhalations. This exercise will clear one’s throat and trachea. Remove all the obstacles in the same manner. In the case of an unclear passage in a person, this may cause coughing and as a result, he/she we may have to spit out whatever mucus and other things that are obstructing the passage.

ImpactThe most effective Pranayama for thyroid problems is Ujjayi. It acts on the throat area and its relaxing and stimulating effects are most probably due to stimulation of ancient reflex pathways within the throat area, which are controlled by the brainstem and hypothalamus. This practice also gives us direct access into the pranic and psychic net work, the substructure of metabolic activity. Nadi shodhana pranayama is useful in re-balancing metabolism.

the victory or ocean sounding breath
focusing, grounding, and aids in concentration

Ujjayi Pranayama is called the ocean sounding breath because you make an ocean sound by contracting the glottis with the inhalation and exhalation. This Pranayama is done through the nose, but it is helpful to begin practicing breathing through the mouth. To make the ocean sound, whisper the syllable "h," feeling the contraction in your throat. Keep this contraction engaged on the inhalation and exhalation. After a couple of breaths try to close the mouth, breathing through the nose while still making the ocean sound in your throat.

Also known as: Hissing Breath, Victorious Breath

Benefits: Concentrates and directs the breath, giving asana practice extra power and focus.

This pranayama is most often used in association with the practice of yoga poses, especially in the vinyasa style. Vinyasa yoga is breath-synchronized movement, and the breath used is Ujjayi breath. Learn this breath while seated in a comfortable cross-legged position. Once you feel confident, begin to use it during asana practice.

1. Inhale and exhale deeply through the mouth.

2. On the exhales, begin to tone the back of the throat, slightly constricting the passage of air. Imagine that you are fogging up a pair of glasses.

3. Once you are comfortable with the exhale, begin to apply the same toning of the throat to the inhales.

This is where the name of the breath comes from: it sounds like the ocean. It also sounds like Darth Vadar.

4. When you are able to control the throat on both the inhale and the exhale, close the mouth and begin breathing through the nose. Continue applying the same toning to the throat that you did when the mouth was open. The breath will still make a loud noise coming in and out of the nose. This is Ujjayi breath.

5. Now start to use this breath during your practice. If the teacher tells you to move on an inhale, make it an Ujjayi inhale. If you need a little something extra while holding a pose, remember this breath.

Another way to think about Ujjayi Breath is to visualize your throat as a garden hose, with the breath passing through like a trickle of water. If you put your thumb partially over the opening of the hose, you increase the power of the water that is coming through. This is the same thing you are doing with your throat during Ujjayi breathing. The air that comes in through your constricted throat is a powerful, directed breath that you can send into the parts of your body that need it during yoga.

Pacifying the stars

If you perchance read through the Hanuman Chaleesa blog - you will notice how even the folks who have met with super success (in life as visible to the common man) still may have blemishes with the stars. So, if you have misfortune that follows you and you are a bit lost on the reasons why, here is the 101 on getting the malefic planets to be on your side - appropriate google search will provide you the details on these.

STEP 1
Checkout astrogyan.com or cyberastro.com and create an astrological reading. It is fairly accurate with things amiss in your horoscope or astrological chart.

STEP2
Figure out what is 'not right' in your chart, and then start looking at how to fix it.

For Malefic effects of Venus (Shukra)
here are some stotras or mantras
Om Hreem Shri Shukray Namah
om shu[ng] shukraa-ya namah(a)
Om Shum Shukray Namah'
Venus Stotra
Hreem Himkund Mrinnaa-laabham Deityaanaam Paramam Gurum.
Sarva-shaastra Pravaktaaram Bhaargavam Pranamaamyaham.
Om Bhurbhuvah Swah Shukrah Ihaagachh Ihatishtthah, Shukraay Namah".
I pray to Venus, the utimate preceptor of demons, promulgator of all learning, he who shines like the fiber of snow-white jasmine.
MANTRA: To be chanted on Friday at sunrise, especially during major or minor Venus periods:
Shukra seed mantra: OM DRAAMG DREENG DROUNG SAH SHUKRAY NAMAH.
RESULT
: The planetary diety Shukra is propitiated

For Kal Sarp Dosh -
it is recommended to go do pooja with the help of a Pandit in the vicinity of a Shiva temple (Tryambakeshwar)

Malefic effects of Shani (Saturn).
Reading of 'Hanuman Chalisa' is more effective.
Hanuman Kavach is also very effective.
Hanuman Chalisa is generally read more commonly in the north India than that of Hanuman Kavach.
Few people belive that worshipping Shri. Pachamukhi Hanuman is more effective.
In Maharashtra, Panchamukhi Hanuman Kavach is believed to be more effective, especially for court (legal) matters. It is also believed to be effective in Sadesati.

Malefic effects of Mangal (Mars)
Recite the following Mangal Mantra, to propitiate the red planet. Recite the following Mantra every day in the morning or on every Tuesday.

"Dharnigarbhasambhutam vidyutkantisamprabham,
Kumaram shaktahastam ch manglam
pranmamyaham"
The one who is the son of Bhooma Devi, One who has the lustre of lightning, One who has Shakthi in his hand, and the auspoicious one, I prostrate that Angaraka.
Coral is the gem which represents the Mars.
Mangal Seed Mantra - OM KRAM KREEM KROM SAH BHOMAYE NAMAH [10000 TIMES]

Malefic effects of Jupiter Guru Mantra
The planet Jupiter or guru rules thighs, flesh, fat, kidney, liver and arterial system. It also controls the auricle and the ventricle. If Jupiter is badly in birth chart, it can cause problems like apoplexy, diabetes, piles, tumors, blood cancer, liver malfunction, loose motions, palpitations and even gout. In such case apart from medical attention the patient can recite the following Guru Mantra, to reduce the ill effects of the afflicted Jupiter in one's birth chart.

"Devanamch rsinamch gurum kanchan sannibham,
Buddhi bhutam trilokesham tam namami brihaspatim"
Recite the above Mantra every day in the morning or on Thursday.
The gem is Pukhraj ( yellow sapphire).

VARANASI: Sporting a large red vermilion 'tika'and clad top-to-toe in a white salwar-kameez and printed dupatta, actor Aishwarya Rai looked very much part of the Bachchan clan during her visit to the temples in Varanasi.

Srikant Mishra, a priest at Kashi Vishwanath temple, said the family took a pledge during 'jalabhishek'but it can only be disclosed by the family.

Present at the ceremonies were superstar Amitabh Bachchan, his wife Jaya, daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda, brother Ajitabh and his daughter Namrata. Family friend and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh was also present.

The group arrived at Kashi Vishwanath around 2.45 am and took part in mangala aarti and jalabhishek. They then reached Sankat Mochan temple around 5 am, when the morning aarti was in progress.

After prayers to the presiding deity — Lord Hanuman, they did the parikrama of the sanctum sanctorum and went to Ram-Janki temple situated in the premises.

Acharya Chandramouli Upadhyaya, the local priest of the family and astrology teacher in BHU, later led them to the 'havan kund', where 70 priests had been performing 'shanti paath'for the family since Sunday.

This ritual was followed by the 'panchang pujan'and Hanuman Chalisa recital. After 'Nav-griha shanti paath', the family took part in the 'yash-kirti yajna'and havan with Ash sitting to Abhishek's left. The rituals were performed under Upadhyaya's guidance.

Temple sources said the ceremony may have been an exercise to remove hurdles in the path of Ash's marriage to Abhishek.

According to astrologers, Aishwarya is a 'manglik'and planet Mars needs to be satiated before wedlock, lest it acts as a destructive force in the union.

But Upadhyaya was tight-lipped and said the Bachchans would say whatever needed to be said on the subject.

The family, along with Ash, had landed at Babatpur airport late on Sunday night. While Amar Singh, Abhishek, Aishwarya and Shweta reached from Delhi, Amitabh, Ajitabh and Namrata came from Mumbai.

Jaya Bachchan was already in the city for the shooting of the film Chooriyan. After talking to Upadhyaya, the family spent a few hours at the Taj Ganges and went to Kashi Vishwanath temple at 2.45 in the morning. After two hours of 'aarti'and 'jalabhishek', they left for Sankat Mochan temple.

Other devotees — also present for the 'aarti'performed by five priests led by Acharya Sitaram Shastri — were requested to leave by district magistrate Rajiv Agrawal, as the Bachchans wanted to perform a 'private puja'.

Temple sources said Amitabh performed the 'jalabhishek'with a silver 'shringi'— a vessel used to pour water/milk on the deity — with wife Jaya standing to his right. Son Abhishek stood to the left with Aishwarya to his right.

Asked about the puja by Abhishek and Aishwarya, Mishra told reporters he asked them "to offer sacred water to the Shivaling like Amitji and Jayaji".

After 'jalabhishek', the whole clan went to 'Parvati kaksh', where Aishwarya used vermilion on the idol to apply the 'tika'on her forehead.

After the ceremonies, the Bachchans left for the hotel. Later, Jaya and Rani Mukherjee, who was also in Varanasi for a film, bid them goodbye.

The stars left the hotel at 11.40 am using the service entrance they had used to enter — much to the delight of the kitchen staff, but leaving the media exasperated.

Divine blessings worked for Ash and Abhishek!
Bharat Kumar
Varanasi, January 15

THE BLESSINGS of Lord Vishwanath (Shiva) and Hanuman seem to have paved the way for the Abhishek-Aishwarya engagement ceremony (Roka) on the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti in Mumbai on Sunday.

“Yes, I do believe that it was the blessing of Lord Shiva and Hanuman that Abhishek and Aishwarya are going to be married,” a fan of the Bachchan family said. It may be noted that the Bachchans had performed a ‘ Yashkirti Yagya’ in the ancient Kashi Vishwanath temple and Sankat Mochan temple.

With Ram, Lakshman and Sita, LIVE IN MY HEART, King of Gods!

Here is a different perspective on Hanuman that I found quite fascinating
http://www.e
xoticindiaart.com/article/hanuman

God form - everywhere

Tulsidas “Meet everyone with affection, one never knows in what form the Lord appears!

So I hear that God is present everywhere, lifeforms are nothing but embodiments of God, getting their source of energy from the perpetual machine of God.

And I start thinking of the solicitors who showed up at my door, to whom I have been so unkind (only) when they decided to hold a discussion about the validity of showing up un-announced at my door. I wonder how that figures in the big scheme of things?

How would I behave if I was enlightened - in touch with my atman? Would I exhibit lot more patience with them? Probably? I did spoil their mood and their day when I was so unkind to them - after they starting doing their debate over the validity of their presence at my door. So, was I meant to do that - in the big scheme of things - that was bound to happen. But if they represent God, then why do they need to experience such rebuke? I really wonder.

Your comments on this are welcome

More anecdotes on this - and I quote (based upon - Hanuman is always present when we are singing or talking of Ram and his praise)

Once Lord Rama asked Hanuman, "How do you contemplate on Me?" "At the physical level, You are my Master and I am Your servant. At the mental level, I am a spark of thy Divine Self. At the Atmic level, You and I are one," said Hanuman.

Pleased with Hanuman’s reply, Lord Rama presented him with a pearl necklace, which was given to Mother Sita by her father, King Janaka, at the time of her marriage. Hanuman held this very valuable necklace in his hand, began to remove all the pearls one by one from the necklace, and kept it near his ear for some time and then after biting each one of them, threw them away. Sita was surprised to see Hanuman behaving thus. She thought that Hanuman had not given up his monkey traits. Rama knew the intention behind this act of Hanuman. However, in order to make Sita understand this, He asked, "Hanuman, why are you biting and throwing away such precious pearls?" Hanuman replied, "O Lord, I am examining whether I could listen to Your name in the pearls. Since I could not hear, I am throwing away. The pearl is no better than a stone if there is no Rama Nama in it. I want only You." Listening to this statement of Hanuman, Rama offered Himself by embracing Hanuman. The inner meaning of this is Rama is where Hanuman is and vice-versa. Hanuman is one who realized the unity of the individual and God. Consequently, Hanuman was always in a state of bliss.

Hanuman is given various appellations such as Santhudu, Gunavanthudu, Balavantadu (one of peace, virtues and strength). He derived his strength from the Divine name of Lord Rama. Many people confine the Divine Name only to the lips but Hanuman chanted the name of Rama from the depth of his heart. Poison will remain poison even if it is put in a precious vessel studded with diamonds, pearls, emeralds etc. The divine ambrosia will not lose its taste even if it is put in a brass vessel. Likewise, it is the purity of heart, not the external appearance that matters…

Hanuman tearing open his chest to reveal Ram and Sita .... where is the story on that?

And I couldn't help but continue my thoughts down this path - from
shastrix.blogspot.com/
and I quote from the blog penned just yesterday

Came to the end of the chapter on Swami AkhandAnanda and saw the following:
To see God in all beings is the culmination of the Vedantic experience. Swami Akhandananda had that experience, so he served all as God. A few years before his passing away, the swami told a monk his life's philosophy: "The Master has still kept me alive for his work. Distribute your Self among others and bring other souls within yourself. You will see how much joy you will get from it. On the other hand if you are always busy about yourself, you will be entangled within yourself, you will kill your Self, and you will die. [Not knowing the Self is akin to suicide or death.] The more you disseminate yourself among the people, the more you will attain bliss and that will lead you to Self-realization."
John Steinbeck says something similar in his plain-delicious biography (excerpt) of his great friend, Ed Ricketts: (page 7, middle)
Knowing Ed Ricketts was instant. After the first moment I knew him, and for the next eighteen years I knew him better than I knew anyone, and perhaps I did not know him at all. Maybe it was that way with all of his friends. He was different from anyone and yet so like that everyone found himself in Ed, and that might be one of the reasons his death had such an impact. It wasn't Ed who had died but a large and important part of oneself.

Discovering Nisargadatta Maharaj

(Yeh hai Mumbai meri jaan)

Moksha the goal is not beyond the reach of any genuine seeker.

A simple man, Nisargadatta Maharaj (1897-1981)was a householder and petty storekeeper in Mumbai (then known as Bombay) .Like Ramana Maharishi he attracted spiritual seekers across the globe. He got world recognition through the book “I am That”, a translations of his Marathi Tape recordings by Maurice Frydman.

I first heard about him from a reader of my website.

What Arvind wrote triggered my search to understand who Nisargadatta Maharaj was.

Then I got a note from Radhakrishnan Pillai.

I brought a copy of the book “I am That” and tried to read it. To be honest, it took me repeated reading (of even a passage) thinking and reflecting to understand the essence of it.

But once the book started to reveal itself, there has been no looking back in my life. It talks about the absolute from the stand point of the absolute. Nisargadatta Maharaj, was an enlightened saint who abided in himself as himself.

In describing Nisargadatta Maharaj, in the introduction of the book it is written.

"There are seers, teachers and revealers who, while living in the same world, live simultaneously in another world also – the world of cosmic consciousness, effulgent with infinite knowledge. After his illuminating experience Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj started living such a dual life. He conducted his shop, but ceased to be a profit- minded merchant. Eternal life, he perceived, was not to be sought for; he already had it. Having gone beyond the I-am-body idea, he had acquired a mental state so joyful, peaceful and glorious that everything appeared to be worthless compared to it. He had attained self- realization”

I had the deep desire to go and find out the place where he spoke these words of enlightenment. Even though I lived in the city of Mumbai, it took me years to take the initiative. As they say in spiritual path, till the call comes you cannot go.

Then, one Tuesday, on May the 10th, 2005 I made a plan with a few of my‘enlightened’ friends to visit the humble abode of Sri Nisargadatta. I figured that we go all the way to bask in the spiritual environment of Shirdi Sai Baba, Meher Baba, Swami Ramkrishnan, then why be lazy about visiting such spots in ‘aamchi Mumbai’?

We were told that Nisargadatta used to have a Pan-Beedi shop. (Beedi is a hand made local cigarettes containing tobacco for smoking).

We had Nisargadatta Maharaj’s address:

Vanmali Bhavan,

10th Road, Khaitwadi,

Grant Road, Mumbai

And the landmark – A public toilet bank opposite his residence !!!

We finally found the place.

It was the hot afternoon of Mumbai roughly about 12 noon. The roads were narrow. This is a market area of Mumbai, totally crowded, jam packed with traffic, old buildings and shops in each and every gulli (the small streets). It took us about 15 minutes walk in the heat to finally reach the whereabouts.

Maharaj had left his body in 1981.

We were looking out for the building, Vanmali Bhavan. As we asked another passer-by he just pointed out “This one”. We looked at it. There was not a single name plate on the building. No one could recognize it under any means. However we looked what was opposite the footpath, and we found a ‘Public toilet’.

No signs of temple or any religious or spiritual look in that old building. Wondered if we were at the correct place. As we climbed up, a middle age lady was standing in the first floor. “Yes, this is the house.” she told us. This pious middle aged Maharashtrian lady, guided us inside the small house. It had just 2 rooms an entrance through the kitchen and then a small bedroom. In the bedroom in a small corner wall, was a framed color photo of Maharaj. Other than that, there was no sign that a great master ever lived in this place.

A young girl in the house said: “Quite a few people, especially foreigners from Europe come here like you. They then sit in front of the photo of Maharaj, meditate for some time and leave”

The immediate children of Maharaj, had now shifted out from this place formally handing over this place to them.

The young girl said “When he was alive this place was different. The place where you are sitting used to have a plank where devotees used to come and sit. There were steps leading to the downstairs shop from the room. Today we have renovated the place”

The young lady went into the kitchen as she had to attend to some work. We sat there for about 15 minutes in meditation at the feet of the photo.

Thoughts crossed my mind…

“Sometimes close family members also may not understand the depth of a spiritual master”

“ A Living master right in the midst of a the crowded streets of Mumbai”

“A profession as unhealthy as making and selling beedies, a residence as unhealthy as opposite a public urinal, a place where hardly 10 people could sit. A following – across the globe”

Sitting there, I had learnt a bit more. A realized man is much beyond the perception of the persons who look at things only from the worldly level.

I was not expecting anything sensational with this visit as the master had left the mortal coil 24 years back. But the visit was more enlightening than expected.

We were going out to lunch… we felt we had overstayed… As we got into the car another line from the book “I am that” hit me…

“Maharaj is a unique teacher who helps the seekers to a clearer understanding of himself when he comes to him with the age old questions ‘Whence am I? Who am I?” and “whither am I?” The listeners were never turned away from the humble abode of Maharaj then, and are not turned away now”.

About the Book “I am That”

A series of translations of Nisargadatta Maharaj’s Marathi Tape recordings by Maurice Frydman in a question answer format. It s a revised and re-edited version of 101 talks that appeared in two volumes in earlier editions. Presently in its 4th edition it has been reprinted over 17 times.

It has also been translated into 8 foreign languages.

It is considered as “ A Modern Spiritual Classic” and many regard it as the book of spiritual teachings really worth studying.

Some interesting answers of Maharaj from 'I am that'

Questioner : As I look at you, you seem to be a poor man with very limited means, facing all the problems of poverty and old age, like everybody else.

Maharaj : Were I very rich, what difference would it make? I am what I am. What else can I be? I am neither rich nor poor, I am myself.

Questioner : Are you not afraid to die?

Maharaj : Everybody dies as he lives. I am not afraid of death, because I am not afraid of life. I live a happy life and shall die a happy death. Misery is to be born, not to die. All depends how you look at it.

Questioner : Is there a way to realization?

Maharaj : Everything can become a way, provided you are interested. Just puzzling over my words and trying to grasp their full meaning is Sadhana quite sufficient for breaking down the wall. On your side there is so much trouble. On mine there is no trouble at all. Come to my side. You are trouble-prone. I am immune. Anything may happen – what is needed is sincere interest. Earnestness does it.

Questioner: Again a counsel of perfection! To integrate and strengthen the mind is not an easy task! How does one begin?

Maharaj: You can start only from where you are. You are here and now, you cannot get out of here and now.

Questioner: But what can I do here and now?

Maharaj: You can be aware of your being-here and now.

Questioner: That is all?

Maharaj: That is all. There is nothing more to it.

Some of the excerpts (in the note above) are from a note by Radhakrishnan Pillai.

The following note is from Ms Shali Chandna.

She speaks about Ms Scylla Vatcha

Both of the above mentioned taught me the meaning of Yoga, in more ways than one, and I feel love for them and gratitude for what they taught me.

Shakun

Note from Shali

Hi Shakun,
Very interesting! Just for your information Scylla Vatcha & I had
visited Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj in his home at the same address as
below while he was still alive in the late 70's. My memory of him - a
very simple unassuming humble 'deceptively ordinary' human being. He was weak and lying down but talked to us at length - just about ordinary
things.
I had read his enlightening book 'I Am That' and one day when Scylla
told me that she had found his address we both rushed there expecting to see a sage - but we had no idea what a real 'sage' looks like!
After meeting him we came home feeling very inspired cause we felt if
he can realize he is already realized - so can all of us. The goal is not beyond the reach of any genuine seeker.
Incidentally u are doing a great job with this newsletter! Do get in
touch whenever u are in Bangalore.
Lots of love,
Shali

The face of enlightenment

Nothing else needs to be said.
This picture represents Bhagawan Ramana Maharishi in touch with his awareness.
Being in touch with my own awareness will not get me anything more or anything less.
But that is all that is ever needed by me.
I pray to Lord Shiva to give me that....and nothing else.

Hidden secrets

Watching Dan Brown discuss DA VINCI CODE - this theory has been around for a long time. That Jesus was a mortal and has a lineage that can be traced to the current world. True or not, it certainly is a wonderful theory, the secrets of Vatican and such make it certainly intriguing.

Just makes me wonder - what do we really know? Do we really understand things, can we accept things on face value or have to really dig down deeper to uncover the truth? The world itself appears so real, but is it really? Why the deception? Why is truth so hard to grasp upon..JFK? 911? What lies behind the facade of deception? Zone 51?

It is all an exercise in futility. There is one and only one truth - that I exist...
I think we all know this, but we are still sucked into the whirlpool of the world and get fascinated with the trivial....

Spoiler alert: the book’s big secret is that the Holy Grail isn’t a cup, but a code, of sorts, for the lineage of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. Magdalene, it turns out, wasn’t a prostitute, but a close companion of Jesus. Her real identity was concealed by early church leaders who feared the truth would undermine church teaching on celibacy (which, of course, hasn’t been questioned since). “The church, in order to defend itself against the Magdalene’s power, perpetuated her image as a whore and buried evidence of Christ’s marriage to her,” one character explains breathlessly, “thereby defusing any potential claims that Christ had a surviving bloodline and was a mortal prophet.”

Iraq - the state of affairs

Wonder where that is going...
Saddam Hussein was sitting pretty and someone had the idea to go hunt for terrorists in Iraq for no fault of his own. And couple years later he is found like an ordinary criminal hiding in his cave.
But where is all this going...?

The history is usually a done deal.
Bush, whether it was the smart thing or not - did as he was compelled by his circumstances to force our troops into Iraq and in the blink of an eyelid, we hvae 600,000 Iraqis dead and 3000 American soldiers dead, leaving behind tons of friends and families to grieve forever...

Wonder where all this is going. No end in sight. And how this turn of events, Iraq invasion, to Democratic victory, is going to play out in world history. I am sure divyadrishti has some clear thoughts on how it will be playing out. So, did Bush have some influence over it? I doubt it, he is just complying with his role in the big scheme and what has to happen will happen.

We are entrusted with making the right choices - that befits the world and the people - but beyond that we are not in much control.

Living with Spirituality / Spiritualist seekers

Varanasi Ghats

Rishikesh and Haridwar

Urban Mumbaikar

Urban Mumbaikar on the streets

SanFrancisco, Silicon Valley

Picture of hermit caves of Mansarovar

Does it matter which part of the world we live in?

There are sages living in the Himalayas, in the caves of Manasarovar,
or in the hermitage of Haridware, Vatican,
or spiritualist aspirants in the urban sprawl of the cities of Varanasi, Mumbai or Bangalore
or even in the liberal capital of the world San Francisco or Moline, Illinois...

Living in India, spirituality though seeps into the very essence of our soul.
I think it is helpful, being grounded in reality like that. Having all the affluence of the western world for instance can skew reality in our minds. But on the other hand, living in India, spirituality is taken for granted, the grass being greener on the other side of the ocean. Thus spirituality becomes passe and sometimes shunned. Whereas, living in the western world automatically creates a mistique about everything eastern, and the eastern spirituality grows in value, helps bring perspective on its importance. But I must add, having the green is always a good thing to the spiritualist aspirant, haven't seen very many people who are worried about where the next meal is coming from, worry about how they can progress spiritually. Nisargadatta also had a relatively stable life at his spiritual zenith, and I think that maybe very important, unless we elevate ourselves to the state of the maharishi's sitting in the Himalayas.

But the bottomline still is - spiritual aspirants are born - we are altogether a different species, that is guaranteed. Our species, has the right attitude, and irrespective of where we are, what we have experienced, everything is prepping us to forget ahead in the world of spirituality. We are born the achieve, experience, salvitate(ion) and revel in the glory of the the Godliness that exists and seeps into the very core of our being to an extent that it bites us, gnaws at us, every single day, constantly reminding us of the nature of this world and our responsibility (to us).

Yes, we are the chosen ones, we have been offered the red and blue pill and we have made the right choice. It does not matter where we live, where we are, the very fact that I am typing this and you are reading this - indicates that we are the chosen ones.

We are already evolving, and it is in our destiny to achieve that state of moksha, the enlightened Buddha like state, there is a very thin dividing line that separates us from the other side, and all we can do is keep thinking about it, and it will eventually fall into our lap - as easily as the apple that fell into Newton's, or as easy as Archimedes fell into the bath water...when things have to happen - it happens effortlessly, with rarely a sweat when the starts align for us. So no point in fretting and fuming, but enjoy the ride - knowing that the destiny is ours and we are the chosen ones.

Wishes - This 3rd Monday of the Karthikeya auspicious period

I have been mulling this over for some time now, I would like to have that ?? independence to go out for a Shiva mandir tour and produce some wonderful collateral from it (not-for-profit) books, videos and web pages which would become a virtual pilgrimage for all Shiva bhaktas of the world... That would be a nice contribution towards Shiva Bhakti.

I would also like to jump start a Shiv temple, which this area sorely lacks, inspite of all the prosperity bestowed upon....

That is the 'simple' wish for the day :-)

SHIVOHAM

I received this following query by email

"Who is great shiva vishnu ,bhrama. who is behind this universe . what did they do for people, did they die? who is in the vedas . vishnu ,brama , or shiva . is god a female or male. please answer this question"

My response
I am incapable of responding to this question (I am, but that would beating around the Bush - literally this election day) but I do know what other great rishis would respond with.

They would ask
"why dwell on these questions, think about who you are?
Get in touch with your own awareness, find out the ultimate truth and the only truth, that I exist. "That I exist", that is the one and only truth SHIVOHAM, SHIVOHAM, SHIVOHAM"

And in my search for Shivoham, I bumped into this page http://www.geocities.com/ramya475/Nirvanashatkam.htm and the Nirvanashatkam took on a new meaning as I read it, a different view and perspective, which was overwhelming in some ways, considering my earlier post. The truth is out there, why do we shy away from the one and only truth....
It also seemed to be a letter from God, as I too had started down the path of SHIVOHAM...

Nirvana Shatkam

(Sextet of salvation)

This is one of the rare stotras written by Adhi Sankara Bhagawat Pada identifying himself with the Lord Shiva and clearly explaining his theory of non-dualism. It is mellifluous and has remarkable tempo. There is a story that one of his disciples started saying Shivoham like the Acharya without understanding its significance. The Acharya visited the black smith’s house and happily drank one tumbler of molten iron and ordered the disciple to do so.Naturally he was not able to it. The Acharya told him that as for himself the molten iron or ice cold water are not different because he has realized that he is no different from Lord Shiva, And till the disciple attains that state, there is no point in his repeating Shivoham i.e “I am Shiva”

Munnabhai - a test of faith

I hear that "Lage Raho Munnabhai " may be India's nomination to the Oscars. I had to check it out.

It is certainly a gut wrenching movie in a nice way. I remember the times as little kids, wherein the smallest of things would be earth shattering, inspiring me to reach all sorts of noble behavior, and the strong desire to do some goodness in the world. This one generated that same sorta feeling.

There are two sides of every coin, but what I want to dwell upon is the faith that Munnabhai exhibits while going through an ordeal. Of course, in real life, things don't play out so smooth and there are too many variables in the equation, but what if we know that the end result will be all good (moksha?) if we stayed on the path of truth (just a simple thing, truth), wouldn't we all do it?
I think we all do know it, but the truth is a hard act to follow. I have been punished for telling the truth and it always stuck in my mind as "not the street smart thing to do". And in this day and age, I am afraid also of being perceived an eccentric (not kewl) and cut away from the mainstream. I must say I am scared of not being part of main stream society, as I would then be categorized as a recluse, and I do wonder if once the doors close, will they ever open again. But a part of us is driven by the need to be financially well-off, and all our instincts help us in that endeavor.

But I really do wonder, if we know that leading life to the truest extent, being true to our own character, is the only way to true happiness, why do we not go down the path?

And the actors have performed effortlessly - or so it seems - but it does seem to me that roles like these cannot be enacted, you have to be truly one, cannot con the audience. Sanjay Dutt is playing his last innings, but giving us moments of pure joy, making it all worthwhile, may this stint go into extra innings. And.....the Sari is back in vogue and Vidya Balan is poised for greatness.

My hiatus

I bit of a hiatus there, as the personal life took over - and it was amazing to find out that as I tried to keep pace, how quickly the spiritual thoughts fell out of perspective. Conclusion: A spiritual life and thought is also fated. Thus, if I am dwelling on it, I should be thankful and make the best use of the opportunity to enhance that chain of thought and get to that spiritual growth. But even that thought, gets implanted from somewhere.

Ummm....I really should give up....I am never in control anyway. Just BE!

Which brings me to another topic, had a buddy visit on Friday, and I was a bit struck by his ability to focus and get lost in the beauty of life, derive pure pleasure in just listening to music, from the depth of the soul, and I wonder where I lost that. That pure pleasure, that used to soak my body and soul and every ounce of me, as I immersed myself into something. Now, it is just jumping from one thought to another, one act to another, one to-dos to another, hardly a pause anywhere. I guess I do need a paradigm shift - reprioritize and cast away the useless, and stick to the value statement of life as it should be.
